CFA Salary in India 2026 — By Role, City, and Years of Experience

By Venika Wadhwa, CFA • Published 18 May 2026 • 8 min read

CFA does not come with a salary sticker. What it does is open access to investment roles that pay better than the corporate finance or accounting tracks most candidates are coming from. The salary impact depends almost entirely on which role you move into and which employer hires you — not on having passed three exams.

Salary by Role (2026 Estimates)

CFA Candidate vs CFA Charterholder — Does It Matter for Salary?

Candidate status (having passed one or more levels) helps in interviews by signalling commitment but rarely changes base salary. The charter (all three levels + 4,000 hours experience) can open senior roles and commands a premium in direct hiring. The gap is most visible at 5–8 years of experience when senior analyst or PM roles come into play.

Which Roles Benefit Most from CFA

Equity research is where CFA has the clearest signal — most job postings at top brokerages list CFA as required or strongly preferred. Portfolio management at AMCs similarly. Wealth management at private banks is CFA-friendly but also values CFP/CWM. Risk and credit roles value CFA but also FRM. Corporate finance roles are mostly CA/MBA territory.

The Honest Career Calculation

CFA exam fees: approximately $1,700–2,500 total (₹1.4–2.1 lakh). Plus coaching ₹45,000–65,000 per level. Total investment: ₹3–5 lakh over 3–5 years. Salary uplift from moving into equity research: ₹4–8 lakh per year over a mid-level corporate finance salary. The math works in 1–2 years — but only if you make the role transition.

"The candidates who see the biggest salary jump from CFA are not those who stayed in their old role with a new credential. They are the ones who used the CFA to make a deliberate move into an investment role they couldn't have accessed otherwise."

Quick Answers

What is the salary of a CFA charterholder in India?
CFA charterholder salary in India varies widely by role and employer. In equity research, a CFA charterholder earns ₹12–25 lakh at 3–5 years experience. In portfolio management, ₹20–50 lakh at 5–8 years. In wealth management, ₹10–22 lakh at 3–5 years. These are ranges, not guarantees — employer type (top AMC vs boutique) matters more than the credential alone.
Does CFA certification increase your salary in India?
CFA designation can increase salary, but primarily by opening access to roles that pay more — equity research at top brokerages, portfolio management at AMCs — rather than giving a flat percentage hike in your current role. Candidates who use CFA to transition into investment roles from corporate finance or accounting see the largest salary impact.
What is the salary after CFA Level 1 in India?
CFA Level 1 alone does not significantly change salary in most cases. It signals commitment to the CFA Program and can help in interviews for analyst roles, but employers hire based on the full CFA designation or candidate status with clear progression. The salary impact is strongest after all three levels are passed and the work experience requirement is met.
Which city pays the most for CFA professionals in India?
Mumbai pays the highest for CFA professionals in India, driven by concentration of mutual funds, brokerages, and private banks. Delhi-NCR (Gurgaon) has strong demand in wealth management, PE, and corporate treasury. Bangalore is growing particularly in fintech and quantitative roles. Hyderabad and Pune have limited buy-side presence but growing investment operations roles.
Is CFA salary better than MBA finance in India?
CFA and MBA finance lead to overlapping but different roles. A top MBA (IIM-A/B/C) commands a premium starting salary of ₹20–35 lakh through campus placements. CFA typically requires 2–5 years of work experience to reach similar levels. However, CFA charterholders in senior investment roles — portfolio managers, senior analysts — can earn as much or more than MBA peers at 8–10 years. CFA has stronger signal in pure investment roles; MBA has broader access to banking, consulting, and corporate roles.
